Yes, that's the general idea.

Now if a trend develops in GDXJ for example, you might want to try and ride the trend in JNUG.

Just remember to limit your losses if you get whipsawed. For example playing JNUG, you will obviously have to have a wider tolerance for potential losses, then you would playing GDXJ, as your gains will be that much higher.
