So, now you have
one gallon in the small bucket and nothing in the big bucket.
Fill the big bucket with 9 gallons, and pour three gallons into the small bucket, leaving SIX gallons in the big bucket.
Can you see it now? We're looking for two gallons. Come on, just a few more yards - you can do it!
