That leaders in Israel and Turkey envision a network of four underwater pipelines for transporting Russian oil and natural gas, with feeder lines to Jordan, the Palestinian Authority and Lebanon brings to light a pertinent point. The Kurd issue is only one huge factor in the dissention between Turkey and the United States. (#msg-10785569) Turkey is becoming a major transit point for oil and gas in the region. By setting up Israel and neighbors with oil and gas from Russia Turkey is proposing a north/south pipeline. The United States has made it emphatically clear to the point of killing many people through instigating war in the Northern Caucasus that the world is not to build north/south pipelines. Turkey is defying the United States.
The U.S.--and specifically the Clinton White House--was determined to oppose any "north/south" pipelines. The White House adopted a plan, cooked up by long-time ruling class strategist Zbigniew Brzezinski, to create an "east-west" pipe which would bypass both Russia and Iran. #msg-3775550
This abhorence of north/south pipelines has become even stronger with Bush.
