not clear on why you would be penalized for over $1k in dividends in your IRA?

I forget the name (UBTI?)but it's intended to ensure that no one can collect profits from a company that are never taxed on any level, even corporate. There is a way for companies to get around it and that's by making their distributions in the form of shares, which Kinder Morgan did with KMR. Unfortunately, KMR is being absorbed back into KMI but there are other MLP structures that do the same thing. Hold them in a Roth and they are never taxed on any level.
