Martha is in trouble because she tried to stonewall what she did. Too many other people involved so the truth came out after all. Had she owned up to it she most likely wouldn't be in the mess she is in. The reason she didn't tell the truth perhaps goes back to Martha's personality. Do you really believe she bought all that expensive dinnerware at garage sales? LOL
