Mlsoft. You are being very generous to both Bush & Blair with your excuses and explanations. Sure, those are possibilities, but should we not expect a bit more research, confirmation and accuracy when the leader of the world's only superpower makes his case for war in the most notorious powder keg of the world? I don't want to think about what this country would be going through right now had a democratic president presented bogus proof for a war that killed 170 servicemen (and counting).

<<Has it ever occurred to you that he might have been given intelligence material which was mistaken???? I am sure you have never made a mistake, but most of us have. Why would he lie about something that would surely be checked out by the hundreds of media sources that hate him??? That is nonsense.>>
Msl,
You do yourself a disservice here. If he ever admitted that what he said about the IAEA was mistaken, I missed it. His admin came into office lying (about the "vandalism" that Clinton staffers allegedly engaged in--when it was finally discovered four months later that no vandalism had taken place, Ari Fleisher said in a press conference with a straight face something like "we stand by our previous statements and that is all I have to say about it"--it is no wonder he is leaving, I can't believe he doesn't pewk every night when he goes home), and I don't think they have ever stopped. They understand advertising and symbolism. They understand that the first story that creates the association in people's mind is the important one, not the truth. They have lied continually about evidence connecting Saddam to Al Qaeda--I know, you will bring up that camp in northern Iraq, but even if that camp was an Al Qaeda camp, that wasn't an area that Saddam controlled. I don't know why it was permitted to exist if it was a training camp--it should have been bombed by US/British planes or taken out by the Kurds who did control the area.

There have been repeated lies, even more than Seabass pointed to. You say, why would he do that, knowing that he would be found out, that is nonsense. Don't you remember that tearful story to Congress by the lovely young Kuwaiti nurse about how Saddam's troops were throwing babies out of incubators--a "nurse" who turned out to be a daughter of a Kuwaiti diplomat and who turned out to be a marvelous actress, coached by a PR firm Hill & Knaughton hired by the Bush admin to drum up support for action against Iraq? Why would they do that? What happened to that nurse? Was she put in jail for perjury? No. Was she fined? No. Was the Bush41 admin ever punished in any way for what they did? No.

You say, that is nonsense that they would intentionally lie. Why would they do that? You are being naive. They do it because it helps them get what they want, and they know that they won't pay a price. No political price. No legal price. No price whatever except for being the butt of a few jokes by late night comedians and a few admonitions by some democrats who will be labelled wacko hysterical wimps.

"Truth will out," Byrd said on the Senate floor a couple of weeks ago. I hope he's right. I fear he is optimistic.

Mlsoft, the "Chitt Happens" argument doesn't hold water here...

Of course we ALL make mistakes! And sometimes people make really stupid mistakes because we're "only human", after all. But if infact intelligence "mistakes" we're made on the level that many in the US and around the globe are indicating. We've got some serious problems in DC, and with our "war on terror". And you don't send 150,000 troops into combat, risking their lives on a "mistake" of this magnitude. You don't initiate a policy that will kill many people by "mistake". And you certainly don't thumb your nose at (and alienate!) the global community over a "mistake" - like this one, especially when the global community continually questioned the "info" and motives - because they are wrong, or liars, or etc, & We are right.

Chitt happens is a reasonable defense sometimes, but not this time. This time the American people and the global community need to know what really happened. Our gov needs to answer to it's people and to the world. Fair enough??...
