I think you are misreading "fear of Spanish" in the thread here, what is expressed is the need to build a nation from multiple stock, not necessarily by eradicating the contributions from such multiple stock. However, there are very few successful nations with multiple "legal" languages in the land. The Belgians still have strifes between the flemish and French speaking (Wallonians?), only the Swiss as far as I know are getting along (more or less?) with three tongues as the legal languages.
Yes, I presume that there might be some residual mistrust passed over from generation to Catholics (and Jews, but fopr different reasons), after all the US was the refuge to many protestant from catholic prosecution in Europe, but even that will pass, we already had a Catholic president, not far behind we'll have a Spanish Catholic President, and who knows, maybe even jewish President. Times will tell, and times may kill bigotry after all.
