#18816 RE: sarai #18807

The terms 'liberal' and 'conservative' have become so twisted around now in the US that they are completely useless, the meanings have been distorted into their opposites in some cases .... one of the most famous liberales of México was Benito Juárez, and he was good friends with one of the most famous US liberales Abraham Lincoln, they both had wars going on and their hands full during their presidencias but helped each other all they could under the circumstances ..... on the central issue of slavery between the US and México, a great many US liberales like Daniel Webster and Thoreau and Emerson did all they could to support us on the abolition front ... that's what it meant to be 'liberal' then, and you know in most other places, for instance the UK who invented this tongue we use, it still means that

I don't see how the state can get out of the education business ... every civilised nation makes some level of education mandatory, the alternatives to doing so would seem to have horrendous consequences, strata of society without any guidance at all ... it is partly a control thing, entirely a control thing in some places i would guess .... so on the grounds of pragmatism, maybe you have to count in the costs of not educating, before you decide to save the funds, or spend them on more ammunition for the military, or whatever .... i have strong libertarian leanings in financial matters too, still what works is what is good .... as for the term 'help' i believe sarals first brought that up, and i responded to her post [doing my best to keep you two straight today -g-] ... cheers
