To some degree I am just making an outrageous statement about closing Private Schools. The question is not about school funding. Obviously if one is willing to pay additional money to send one's kid to school the question is not about money. You have this choice you can send your kid to school for "free" or you can pay for their education elsewhere. The fact that the voucher system is being implemented to help defray the costs of Private Schools really seems ridiculous to me. Not only does it violate what I see as church and state issues but it rewards people who are already willing to pay more.
Free and Public Education is what I support. Mandatory education.
Look at the Schools in Berkeley CA sometime. That bastion of far out lefties has two totally different school systems. One for people who don't want their kids in Public schools and one for people who have no alternative, or prefer public schools. Berkeley High School has this saying about it, "It is either Yale or Jail." That used to be one of the best High Schools in the Nation. So what happened? The redistribution of wealth through Proposition 13 is what happened. 1978. That tax revolt against property taxes was the first shot at the education system. A shot fired I might add in retaliation for school busing.
Fixing the problems inherent in the schools or the government will not be solved by tearing apart the government as many on the right like to argue. Shifting the tax base back to the states and the communities is not the answer. The funding of inner city and poor school districts is expensive. Most of the problems are not simple to deal with, private education is not going to help.
Or something like that.
