The PS externalization may be part of the signal that stimulates macrophages to phagocytose the tumor cells (Krysko et al., 2006).



The understanding of PS's immunomodulatory effects has changed since 2006. As one might have noticed with the above quote:

However, the eat me signal of externalized PS in an tumorigenic micro-environment actually stimulates metastatic predisposition of cytotoxic cellular environments, IMO..

Now, it might be suggested with Bavituximab's new understanding, is that in order to change this cytotoxic microenvironment, PS must be blocked and phagocytosis delayed until an immunomodulatory cellular balance is met, such as maturation of dendritic cells, and M2 class to M1 class is achieved. In doing so transition the tumor microenvironment from cytotoxic to immunostimulatory.
