I don't get it either. Education just doesn't seem to be the priority it use to be. I know that here in CA, I've been concerned about it for years and really nothing has been done. Now, big cuts are coming down the road, teachers being laid off and even schools being closed. It looks to get worse before better.

Like you said about Condi it is the parents. My daughter who was born with a book attached to her nose has already read every book they assigned her from 3rd grade on. So she rereads them and she and her mother go to the library at least once a week and get other books. For all the arguments I hear all the time about how bad education is in the USA all I can say is show me a country that invents as much as the USA, creates as many jobs. At one time it was all Japanese owning Peeble Beach and kids going to school day and night. Look at it now.

"So 50 years ago, a 5th grader could read something that a current 7th grader cannot"

brainlessone...

Yep - but the kid now has something called "self esteem" which is now defined as feeling good about yourself no matter how lazy, ignorant, or unmotivated you are. No matter what bad things happen, today's child is taught that it is the fault of someone else and there is no such thing as personal responsibility.

"Hey, it is society's fault I am a failure so the world owes me a living."
