#3852 RE: Data_Rox #3841

Two Interesting Documents on the UMTS Forum Server ...

... with the first being considerably more informative than the second, but with some value to both (at least to me and perhaps for some others).

The ETSI & 3GPP Newsletter has some very good background on the state and contents of the various 3GPP Releases for IMT-DS & IMT-TD WCDMA and it was godd enough, and updated enough for me to print out and file in a readily accessible location.

The second is a Nokia Whitepaper titled "A History of 3G." This paper is essentially a "pitch" for WCDMA, offering reasonably good historical perspective, and it discusses CDMA2000 as an "alternative route to 3G." In discussing 1xRTT, it states:

1xRTT increases the voice capacity of the former [IS-95] by approximately 40% and allows data transfers speeds up to a peak of 144kbps, to CDMA2000 1xEV-DO which has a theoretical bit rate of 2mbps.

Network carriers implementing 1xRTT are experiencing capacity gains of 60% to 80% (at least in a trial environment). While these capacity gains require that all channels be converted to 1xRTT carrier, and all IS-95 handsets deployed be 1xRTT, the statement is somewhat "bush league," IMO.

One interesting exhibit is an EMC pie chart that breaks down "New Subscribers by Technology and Region in 2002 (Top 10 excluding Japan)":
- GSM Asia Pacific 44.6% CDMA Asia Pacific 5.4%
- GSM Western Europe 13.2%
- GSM Eastern Europe 11.6%
- TDMA Latin America 5.6% CDMA Latin America 2.8%
- GSM Africa 4.9%
- GSM Middle East 2.9%
- TDMA USA/Canada 2.2% CDMA USA/Canada 6.7%
