They don't have their own patented version, that is a fact, I looked the application up again today and it received another decline in Feb 2014. So long story short, they obviously want the tech, and obviously don't have it, I feel that is a good reason to want VPLM's... you can find it on the USPTO PAIR site...

Their version was rejected by the patent office. Thus, if they have version they are using, then it would in all likelyhood be infringing upon another issued by the patent office. Did you look at the actual patent office website under the transaction tab to see this history or did you read an article about it? Just curious if you are familiar with the navigation of the USPTO website. If not, then any number of us can point you in the right direction if you wish.
Also, what makes VPLM's LI unique is the process used which renders the intercept undetectable by the parties on the connection. I am not aware of any other technolgy that can make that claim. JMO
