Yesterday, after finishing my computer time in the morning, I left for a few errands in town. I decided to treat myself to a muffin before I left. It was the last one in the package.
I had a few more stops than I planned, and it was about 11:30 when I returned. A bit too early for lunch. But I was really hungry. The Commander was taking a shower, so I knew there wasn't any possibility he'd be making me a snack. I looked in the refrigerator for something to nibble on. By this time, I really regretted eating the last muffin earlier.
Decades ago, Bill Cosby played a scene where the kids were holding the refrigerator door open too long. He told them that with all the cold escaping, they'd be attracting penguins, and in fact, he thought he could hear one at the front door at that very moment. The Commander and I use this bit of Cosby's comedy to gently remind each other that we're wasting utilities and should close the refrigerator. Over the years, we've shortened what we say. "Shall I get the door? The penguins are knocking", has become, "Hear the doorbell?", and finally, "Ding Dong."
Anyway, I was staring into the refrigerator looking for a quick snack. My gaze didn't settle on carrot sticks. I wanted a real treat. Then the doorbell rang.
I was sure it was The Commander. Somehow, he managed to give me the usual hint in a new way. I was curious about how he did it. I was about to call out to him that the penguins are ringing the doorbell, and I've already closed the refrigerator door, when I decided I'd better take a look. I could see someone in a green coat was standing on our front porch. I wasn't expecting anyone.
I opened the door. It was a little old lady. She told me that she lived across the street, that she's been in Florida for the winter, and that she just returned home. She new we've moved here recently, and she wanted to welcome us to the neighbourhood. She said that she'd been baking this morning and she wanted to share some muffins with me.
I thanked her for her kindness, we spoke briefly, and she left. Talk about lucky timing. The muffins were still warm.
The Commander called out, wanting to know who was at the door. I told him a neighbour stopped by to introduce themselves, and left a card. I didn't mention muffins. I was already planning where to hide them. I thought the vegetable drawer would be a possibility.
A few moments later, The Commander came out. He seemed to have the sniffles. "Sniff, sniff", "this place", he said, "smells like", "Sniff, Sniff", then he grinned, "FRESH MUFFINS!"
He made a pot of tea. We had a muffin each. Cranberry. Yumm!
Now I have a few errands today too. And there's only one muffin left. Do I eat it now, or take a chance that it'll still be there when I get home?
Cheers, PW.
