You are correct. I think is is a simple denatured solvent that will dissolve the silk. I dont think we could compete with amsilk in the goo simply because our silk is always going to have silkworm silk in it and the process to remove that would put our costs too high.
I think the protein expression of pure spider silk proteins will come from our platform worms. It will not require them to spin a fiber, they would just express the goo. I do not see that happening any time soon. There is not a huge market for it yet and it is pretty well saturated with the various goo producers.

Just my WAG.

I will say that IMO slime eels(hagfish) would be better for protein production.
