SYRIA REVOLT WARNING

"All factions of the Syrian opposition and activists have come to the conclusion that the regime in Syria has to be changed," he said.

Khaddam was speaking after a two-day meeting in Brussels of Syrian opposition groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood, liberals, Communists and Kurds.

These Syrian opposition groups look to be US backed.

This is very interesting the Muslim Brotherhood organizations in the Arab Nation are tied in with the Islamic Party, known pawns for the US. It goes without saying the Kurds are big time stooges for Bush and that Turkey is watching this potential disaster.

Turkey/Kurds

Jaafari's recent visit to Ankara, of which he neglected to inform Kurdish Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in advance, has also reignited tension with Iraq's Kurds. Ankara fears their empowerment will embolden its own Kurdish minority, and Iraqi Kurds fear that Ankara is now sidestepping them to keep a check on their ambitions.

Such adventurism would, of course, require US acquiescence, and unnerve Iran and Syria. Of all Iraq's neighbors, Syria has perhaps the most ambiguous relationship to Iraq's widening vortex. What role Syria has played in allowing fighters to cross into Iraq is an enduring mystery of the war. What is clear is that the phenomenon is a doubled-edged sword for Damascus.

On the one hand disorder in Iraq undoubtedly distracts the United States from its confrontation with the regime of President Bashar Assad. On the other hand, militant Islamist fighters may well be crossing back into Syria, complicating the secular Ba'athist regime's long struggle with the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood.

Muslim Brotherhood/Islamic Party Alliance

The Arab Baath Socialist Party issued a statement on Wednesday in which it reiterated its denunciation of 19 November 2004 of the "Islamic Party" as an "agent" of the US and a product of the American occupation.
The position taken by the "Islamic Party" in accepting the American "Constitution" for Iraq exposed the role of that party once again, the Baath said, as a sectarian puppet manipulated by the US and the Jordanian regime in an effort to prettify the referendum regarding the occupation constitution that is based on Shi`i sectarianism and opens the door to partition of the country.

"The Iraqi people and their armed national Resistance . . . demand that Muslim Brotherhood organizations in the Arab Nation condemn and isolate the `Islamic Party' stooge and cut all ties with its traitor leaders," the Baath statement urged.

SYRIA REVOLT WARNING

Saturday 18 March 2006

BRUSSELS: Exiled Syri-an opposition leaders yesterday announced a united front aimed at toppling President Bash-ar Al Assad.

It would also form a transitional government to bring about democracy.

Former vice-president Abdel-Halim Khaddam, who broke with Assad last year, said the president faces the same fate as Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu in 1989. He and his wife were toppled, summarily tried and executed.

Khaddam, who served under the late Hafez Al Assad, forecast an uprising in Damascus within months, saying Assad was making many mistakes and "digging himself into a hole", while the economic and social situation was becoming intolerable.

Muslim Brotherhood leader Ali Bayanouni said his movement would not seek to impose Islamic Sharia law on Syria.

Asked why he believed Syria was ripe for an uprising, he said: "We believe this regime has now fulfilled all the reasons to collapse. It has no public base."
