What do you mean with "need" help? You don't think that Intel volunteered to lend some engineers to IBM in return for a greater effort to get an Itanium port to market sooner?
Also, I know that DB2 works with Power architecture, but are you sure about Sparc, Alpha, and PA-RISC?
Either way, AMD leveraged a lot of work that had already been done; otherwise, they would not have had a two day port of the software. They get the credit for Intel's work. It will not happen that way on future software ports.
