Well................ she has been a pretty good indicator... LOL!
I have ANOTHER sister who has been a perfect indicator for major bottoms in the market. She always had the max amount taken out for her SEP ira but never invested in stocks because she didn't know anything about stocks and didn't have time to research the matter..... just cash.
She has not once turned on a biz channel, not once picked up a financial magazine. She's got her own biz and when she sees that her doctors are paying her slow and transcribing less (especially elective procedures), she figures the economy is poor. She called the recession in the early 90's and also told me the econ was weakening before the top in the market..... based on her biz.
So..... along comes 2001, market went up, market came down. All this time she has only cash. She calls me up, day before the bottom and tells me she opened a Roth Ira for her son because she figures that in the very long run stocks are a good place to be and his contributions would be tax free since he didn't make enough to pay taxes. I asked her why after all this time she decided to put money in stocks on that particular day. She told me: I turned on the tv and flipped all the channels and every single news station had on it how bad stocks are.... so I figure must be a good time to buy. Sure enough....... bottomed next day. She only kept it in until Jan. 02 because she figured he made great money, why tempt fate.
Then comes fall of 2002.... all this time her son's money is back in cash and sure enough day before the market bottomed, she put it right back in............... same reason.
And so now............... he is back to cash again (made good money again). She never heard on the news how bad stocks were, so she never put his money back in stocks after January. I guess she never got that good bottom Zeev was waiting for.
And what does she think about the economy? Well.... doctors are still paying slow, so she doesn't see a pickup. My husband does though.... he's been getting calls from headhunters for software developers and managers.
