The government regulation is stuck in such a quagmire of legislation. I will say that there is some good off the shelf RC/video GPS equipment out there. For recreational use it is ready to go.
For commercial use I have seen the tech first hand. Its pretty sweet - but I also know has some severe limitations. Folks this stuff is NOT ready for prime time - Not by a longshot.
I saw an article about how Amazon is going to use drones for deliveries - Yeah right my ars... Just wait till one of those drones runs into an old lady who doesn't see it. So who is going to fly and monitor those things ( highschool kids?) the lawsuits will be enormous. Some other garbage about delivering pizzas??- no way, A large pizza and keeping it warm is quite the payload for a even a octo-quadcopter. I will say this it is conceivable but a rare feat to be put in every day use. Let me put into perspective - I build and design RC airplanes I have been now for almost 40 years. Watched the tech grow and progress. Things like battery reliability- electronic servo failures frequency stability - will be problematic - this failures will happen and do. Presently 2.4ghz is the band we use. It's also used for TV transmission by TV stations. TV stations helicopters and Vans can blast out legally some very strong RF to get home station - strong enough to knock out a drone or quad copter type.
There are so many potential problems with this stuff more than I can shake a stick at.
Getting this stuff perfected - is so far away and the legislation and airspace conflicts are so numerous. NOPE don't see this going main stream on large scale - IT IS NOT - I repeat IT IS NOT A BILLION DOLLAR MARKET!
