The only problem I have with your argument (just turn the sig off) is that if forces the person to turn it off for EVERYONE! Maybe they WANT it on, but don't want to be confronted with something that divisive and controversial. If you could turn on and turn off sigs based on INDIVIDUALS then I probably would agree with you, but you can't.
