U.S. Jan. help-wanted index falls to 37

WASHINGTON (AFX) -- U.S newspaper help-wanted advertising volumes declined in January, the Conference Board said Thursday. The help-wanted index fell to 37 from 38 in December. The index was at 42 a year ago. "Economic growth may be picking up in the first quarter but the labor market indicators aren't showing much improvement through January," said Ken Goldstein, an economist for the private economic research group. In a separate survey, the group said online advertising increased in January, although those data are not seasonally adjusted. In the past three months, help-wanted ads in newspapers have increased in five of nine U.S. regions
