PC Magazine: Opteron first look

Conclusion:

With memory getting cheaper and data sets likely to get ever larger, the need to move past the 4GB physical addressing limit of 32-bit architecture might arrive soon for the majority of companies and even high-end users or developers. The Opteron will make the transition to 64-bit a lot easier, especially when desktops featuring the Athlon 64 arrive in the fall. This might just be the entry into corporate America that AMD has been striving for.
