I hear that unemployment is a lagging indicator all the time, but the data don't appear to bear that out. If you consider March 2000 as the peak of the jobs and stock markets, rising unemployment has been pretty strongly correlated with a falling market. And, vice versa, if you look at the series from 1994-1999. I would argue from this that it's a coincident indicator more than anything else.
