Qualcomm is more technologically competent than Allwinner and Mediatek, too, but that hasn't helped them to dominate those sectors.
those companies were/are strong in China 2G (QCOM doesn't do 2G) and 3g TD-SCDMA (QCOM chose not to support since they were getting screwed out of licensing fees). Neither have shown the ability to compete outside of those "walled gardens"..but I'm keeping an eye on MediaTek.
They are focused on winning high end designs and growing margins, and they will walk away from business that impacts their bottom line.
They are actually doing really well in all tiers of emerging markets..see recent earnings report for details.
Intel has a different strategy: fill the fabs and meet some market share milestones in the mobile market,
and in a year or two the ARM foundries TSMC, GloFo, Samsung, etc will have fully depreciated 28 nm lines ready and willing to crank out really cheap chips that make for perfectly good sub $75 emerging market smartphones. It will be a great time to be a fabless chip company shopping around a decent size order.
