Because Core 2 Duo was so strong. It had a much more simpler approach (no L3-Cache) and was still very very fast.



It's great that Intel had C2D, but it actually came down to the fact that Intel didn't build the quad core Nehalem die to be amenable to being "chopped" without a significant rework, so they basically said "screw it" and shifted resources to the dual core 32nm Westmere.
