I think, irl, those were words spoken without thought (happens all too often, dontcha think... lol) and what is keeping them in hot water is their refusal to own up to it and apologize without all the if's and's and but's.
They are learning the consequences of their actions... an apology may have let it blow over... and now, they have turned it into a political arena which may very well ruin their musical careers. Have at, I say. The people have spoken.
