Another bear scenario is that Atom replaces Xeon sockets with much lower margin dollars.

The forcing function is the ARM ecosystem enabling lower cost systems.

I don't think it's as benign as it may first seem. I doubt Avoton or Denverton would even exist in the absence of an ARM server threat.

Then there are external factors like Google wanting their own accelerator IP that they don't want Microsoft to have, and so on...
