Intel initially entered the server market many years ago with lower performing, yet cheaper, alternatives to the RISC processors of the time. They also had a software-porting/ISA disadvantage vs. the RISC incumbents.

The key here may be lower prices and then leveraging the scale and volume of mobile client processors to enable a move into servers to undercut Intel.
