Finallythere, you are not there...

Yes, you can be short the indicies in a 401k. In fact, today I initiated a 200% SPX short on my account. Not because I am betting on a large decline (likely) but as a hedge against my longs. The -200 spx was chosen because I am 75% cash and long some utilities.
