But that was when Windows was the standard, and Windows was tied to the hip to x86, and x86 was for all intents and purposes, Intel.
The funny thing is x86 also comes out on top in other markets.
Apple ditched PowerPC in favor of x86 to run MacOS. RISC chips
from the largest, richest, and most competent process technology
developer and high end processor designer other than Intel just
couldn't keep up with Intel x86 even with native binary software
incumbency. Ouch feel the burrrrrn!
Not mention how Linux on x86 is killing UNIX on all RISCs and even
starting to eat into Windows on x86 in the server market. You know
Linux huh? It runs on just about every processor ISA and its dog but
users overwhelmingly want to run it on x86 servers. So much for x86's
success being inseparable from Windows.
Intel pushing Android will just accelerate Window's demise and steer revenues towards a more ISA-agnostic market.
Windows will likely remain the OS of choice for desktop and laptop
PCs indefinitely and the most popular server OS for some time yet
even with Linux catching up.
As processing requirements increase for Android tablets and basic
features/requirements stabilize market MPU share will naturally start
flowing to Intel. It offers the best perf/Watt with Atom and the best
perf with Core at only marginally worse perf/Watt. Too bad everyone
else has to fight for access to an available TSMC or Samsung teat
only to suck the same stale semi process milk.
