NASD short interest out for April: up 2.8% to a fresh record high of 4,456,502,765 shares.
Very interesting. I truly expected the opposite, to help explain at least some of the recent market strength.
Note also that some of the "snorters" (ie., NTAP, JNPR) short interest increased substantially over this period (appx. 20% for both), meaning, that their recent run can not be explained by short covering. Imagine what would happen if Bernie Schaeffer is correct in saying that if the market is able to hold these levels, we may be headed to over 2000. That would be hard to believe, given the poor fundamentals, but, shorts running for cover could do it, IMO.
