ByoCoat Enterprises is one of the new breed of companies that are locating less harmful chemicals and treatments to rid the food supply of contaminants that harm humans and other life. They are developing a line of cleansers for food, for transportation vehicles and containers to reduce problems with E. coli, Salmonella, Pseudomonas, other troublesome bacteria, molds, and insects on the fruit and produce.
Steve Burwell, the company's founder, reports that their product's active ingredient is "cetyl pyrdinium chloride" -- the same ingredient used in some mouthwashes.
He also reports that at least one of their products is being widely accepted outside the US for improving food exports (to the US and other countries)...and is close to certification by US authorities. Other products, such as ByoSafe, have been certified safe by the EPA and California Department of Pesticide and Rodenticide.

One product that is especially noteworthy for its green-ness is "ByoSafe"...not only for its hold-harmless attributes, but because it uses significantly less water in food hauling truck containers. Trucks are required to wash their cargo containers every time they deliver their goods -- and that adds up to a lot of water!
The active agent used in the process is "quaternary ammonium chloride," which, he said, has effective microcidal, bacteriocidal and fungicidal properties. But what makes the process so effective, he explained, is an electrostatic delivery process, which creates a seamless coating over under, through, around and behind every surface in the trailer, including every little crack and crevice, leaving the microorganisms no place to hide.
ByoSafe Sanitization Products and Application Technology
To address the issue, ByoCoat has developed a sanitizing product and an application technology that the company's tests show dramatically reduce microorganisms in comparison to conventional methods, effectively eliminating the possibility of cross-contamination.
It has been EPA-approved for use on food-contact surfaces and "registered as a sanitizer for bar and restaurant use," according to the data sheet. It can actually be "used as a wash for fruits and vegetables" and can also be "used in meat, fish and poultry processing industries."
Mr. Burwell said that he is in the process of trying to obtain approval for the formulation's use with certified-organic products as well.
The product and technology are being marketed by ByoSafe Solutions, a ByoCoat subsidiary based in Fresno, CA.
