American Eagle Same-Store Sales Rise 11.3 Percent in January, Beating Wall Street Expectations


WARRENDALE, Pa. (AP) -- American Eagle Outfitters Inc. said Wednesday that January same-store sales jumped 11.3 percent, beating Wall Street estimates, on positive traffic and volume trends.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected January same-store sales to rise 7.4 percent.

Total sales for January rose 17.5 percent to $128.8 million from $109.6 million a year ago.

For the fourth quarter, the company said same-store sales rose 7.8 percent, while total sales increased 13.4 percent to $764.4 million from $674 million a year earlier. Analysts forecast fourth-quarter sales of $753.7 million.

American Eagle reiterated its fourth-quarter earnings forecast of 70 cents to 72 cents per share, including a foreign earnings repatriation tax charge of 2 cents per share, while analysts estimate earnings per share of 71 cents. The company plans to report results on March 1.

For the year, same-store sales rose 15.5 percent, and total sales increased 22.8 percent to $2.31 billion from $1.88 billion last year.

American Eagle shares rose 4 cents to close at $27.02 on the Nasdaq, and fell $1.27, or 4.7 percent, to $25.75 in after-hours activity.
