H1N1 swine flu outbreak linked to four deaths in Texas

An outbreak of H1N1 'swine flu' is suspected of killing four people outside Houston, Texas, and leaving four more clinging to life.

Public health officials say the deaths could have been prevented: Current flu vaccines protect against the H1N1 strain of the virus.

The Montgomery County, Texas, Health Department has confirmed that one of the eight people sickened with 'flue-like symptoms' has the H1N1 strain. That patient is still alive.

It's the same strain of the influenza virus that caused the 2009 pandemic that killed at least 3,400 people across the country. At least 115,000 contracted the virus and 27,000 were hospitalized.

None of the four patients who died had received a flu shot, KHOU-TV reports.

Initial tests showed that two other the other surviving patients did not have H1N1 - though all samples are being sent to the Centers for Disease Control for further analysis.
