Stocks *always* go "up" or "down" for a reason - there's nothing random about it.
Microsoft went up because:
- Everything non-Windows/consumer is doing OK (i.e. growing)
- the stock itself is a call option on an Apple-like success of Nokia/Windows Phone
- New game consoles driving a lot of hype
- Steve Ballmer resigning has been a massive positive (not sure why, but everyone hated him)
Intel is flat to down because:
- No revenue growth expected in 2014
- Nobody outside of our little collective here at iHub believes Intel will be a successful, profitable player in phones and tablets.
- The PC is still exhibiting negative growth.
The frustrating thing is that Intel is very well managed, but for whatever reason the guys responsible for making the high level decisions in mobile just screwed up.
You're about to see it with Merrifield/7260. Management had legitimately targeted this as the "kill all of the ARM vendors" part, but guys like Qualcomm simply moved too fast and left them in the dust - at least from a marketing perspective. No way any big phone designs will settle for a mere "dual core" when "quad core" solutions exist from Q
That being said, long term Intel will be fine...but it's going to be a rough 2014.
