U.S. crude oil inventories fell last week 2.3 million barrels, the Energy Department reported Wednesday.
Analysts had expected the figures for the week ending Jan. 20 to show growth. However, at 319.1 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories remain well above the upper end of the average range for this time of year.
Gasoline inventories rose by 3.2 million barrels last week, putting them in the upper half of the average range, Energy said.
Supplies of heating oil rose sharply and diesel fuel inventories were up fractionally for an overall gain, in what is known as distillate fuels, of 1.8 million barrels last week. That puts distillate stocks above the upper end of the average range for this time of year.
