I believe it's going to be a little more complex and longer than that. I presume you're speaking about relatively shallow drills. I know that in one case I was privy to, where the TD was around 18,000', the results were made known to me within a couple of days of reaching TD. Our geologist's exact words were "don't break out the champagne, yet, but it looks like a good sand". About 4 days later they reported that the find was not commercially feasible. 5 days later the hole was plugged, and I was still hungover from the champagne.

There's much more at stake in deep water and much more to consider than just whether or not the dipstick was black. They may need a 100-200+ mm find to decide to develop the field, and I'm guessing it takes a little longer to make that assessment, than it does to warm some ribs.
