WASHINGTON (AFX) -- U.S. consumers' sentiment improved in January, according to Friday media reports on research compiled by the University of Michigan. The consumer sentiment index rose to a reading of 93.4 from 91.5 in December, reports said. This marked the third straight monthly gain after confidence plunged in the wake of two deadly hurricanes that struck the Gulf Coast region

The increase was above the consensus forecast among Wall Street economists, who had expected monthly sentiment to inch higher to 92.6. Analysts pointed to an improving labor market as the catalyst for the boost in sentiment

Sentiment is still below the pre-hurricane reading of 96.5 set in July

According to the latest report, current conditions and expectations improved in the month

The current conditions index rose to 112.0 in January from 109.1 in December. Also higher, the expectations index rose to 81.5 from 80.2
