To get a taste or P&F, I looked at the first lesson on P&F university, downloaded a shareware P&F DOS charting program from BCA and loaded metastock data.

I can appreciate the 45 degree lines showing uptrends and downtrends. Also see support and resistance lines.

Confused as to time period. The P&F softward takes the metastock data, for example, in 1 or 2 year chuncks. But, seems to me that shorter term timing decisions (like what to do today) should depend more heavily on maybe past 2 or 3 weeks of trading info.

What sort of time period are you looking at with P&F?
