A professor in New York who has been evaluating nerve fiber layer loss as a reason for and the earliest sign of loss of damage in glaucoma has noted a decrease in nerve layer in some patients undergoing lasix. In patients that are predisposed to glaucoma this could be serious. He is now recommending nerve fiber layer anaylsis before lasix for his patients and plans to go to print with his findings soon. Nerve fiber layer anaylsis is new technology. It is objective and only takes a couple of minutes to run and will cost less than $100 to perform when it rolls out. It is currently not standard of care but may soon replace visual fields as the best way to follow and diagnosis glaucoma.
The retinal nerve fiber layer is what transmit the electrical signal from the eye to the brain. In glaucoma this nerve fiber layer is damaged leading to loss of vision or blindness.
