Risk, posting from my phone so this reply will be brief. I'm not a scientist either (electrical engineer), but from my perspective as someone who's been through the application process and been awarded a patent, this find is significant in a number of ways.

To me, the smoking gun here is that this research group (from a well-respected university) believes that they have an invention (intellectual property) that is valuable and warrants legal protection. Of course, in this case that invention happen to be the use of MANF to not only aid in the diagnosis of diabetes (which we've heard reference to before) but also to TREAT diabetes through the reinnervation of beta cells. One doesn't simply submit a patent application in good faith when they think they might or might not have something promising. You submit a patent app when you have cold, hard data that can be used to back up your invention and all of your claims. Of course, this is an application only- no patent has actually been awarded yet. That could take several years, but this at least tells me that the researchers believe they're on to something big.

I'm wondering how long this has even been hanging out in the open. I see dates from January and August of this year tied to the app, but it could have just recently become publicly accessible. I periodically Google MANF, AMBS, LymPro, etc. in every possible combination known to man and I just saw this for the first time today...

When I get a chance tonight/tomorrow I plan to sit down and try to absorb the complete text of this patent app and all the diagrams to see exactly what data they might have already.
