yes, using SD allows you to set up fade trades with "odds" that are somewhat reliable. Like: we are at a 2 sd move in price- should I short it? well 95% of the time, thats the right trade assuming distribution is normal(a heroic assumption mind you.) But thats alot better than looking at the vix.
