brief facts about Antimony and Dept. of Defense
According to Dan McGroarty – one of the few people outside of the Pentagon and the U.S. House Armed Services Committee to have seen the report – the DoD named 19 of the mined materials that are in shortfall, the remaining four are classified.
The list of non-rare earth materials deemed in short enough supply to warrant stockpiling include antimony, bismuth, gallium and tantalum.
Rare earth metals such as antimony present a weak link in our defense supply chain. These metals are critical for national security as they are essential for our most powerful weapons.
Military uses of antimony are extensive and includes the hardening of ordnance and the hardening of lead in storage batteries. Antimony is used in ordnance primers, (wep's dept . . duty gunner !) flame retardant plastics and textile items for aircraft interiors, vehicles and insulation on wires and also personal protective clothing.
