The republican argument is the same old formula they use for all the ills of society: "We need to encourage people to accept responsibility".
On the surface that sounds good, but your examples demonstrate why it doesn't always address the real issues and leaves people high and dry. The insinuation is that people are deserving what they get and what is forgotten is that bad things happen to good people.
I especially relate to the thing about $1500/month for health insurance. Quite a few years back, the company I was working for was bought and as a result downsized. I was laid off with 4 weeks severence (representing 4 years of service) and give Cobra as an option. Not much of an option at almost $1000 per month for my family. How can anyone afford that?
