You missed the whole picture. The article was talking about the "US" proposed pipelines. The author was addressing the needs of the US....get it? Also, Assad refused to allow the West to run a pipeline thru his country. Author of your article said it was better to go to Turkey, which is correct.

However, the US took a shit-fit when Iran and Iraq teamed up to put a pipeline thru Syria and that would undercut the West (Saudi Arabia and other Gulf oil producers). Get it? It would cut into profits big time, and affect the petrodollars by reducing the exchange of those dollars since Iraq/Iran would be trading in other currencies. Get the big picture? Serious enough to cause big economic probs for US. Big enough to create a pretext to remove Assad so your president could put in a puppet and stop that pipeline from affecting the USA.
