The article you posted omits the "real" problem for the West. Syria itself may not have much oil, the article is correct. But that is not the issue. Right now Iran/Iraq want to transport energy thru Syria. The big oil/gas comes from Iran and Iraq and they want to reach the Mediterranean Sea. Coincidentally the location of the Port in Syria just happens to be near the Russian naval base near Tartus.
No, Syria has not much oil to bomb, but the pipeline running Iran/Iraq oil certainly undermines the petro-dollars to scare the West enough into a bombing campaign.
