<<Mess? Look at the big picture for change goodluck. Is the situation in Afghanistan better or worse than it was before 9/11? Is the situation perfect? No. Will the situation ever be perfect? No.
Afghanistan isn't a Hollywood movie that ends in two hours with a permanent, perfectly happy ending. LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE! BETTER BEFORE OR AFTER???>>
Sigh.
You know I didn't approve of the Taliban. And you may or may not know that I did approve of the bombing of Afghanistan after they defended Al Qaeda. I think I do look at the "big picture." But by "big picture," I include the "long picture."
The die is cast now. We'll have to wait and see if this episode improves the political situation or just creates more oppression and/or chaos. I repeat what I've said before: it could have been done better. It could have/should have been done with most of the world behind us instead of resenting us. What I see as the "tin ear" of this administration does not give me much optimism that the Aftermath will be a good one. Or even a decent one. It is and always has been the Aftermath that I have been concerned about, not the military part. the military part is relatively easy when you have a "place" to conquer, and a "leader" to depose.
I guess of public commentators, Tom Friedman has probably come the closest to expressing my POV.
