NOTABLE REPORTERS: Apple (AAPL), up 3.5% after beating on both the top and bottom lines and reporting iPhone sales of 31.2M units, topping expectations... AT&T (T), down 0.8% after its quarterly report beat on the top line but missed by 1c on the bottom line... Juniper Networks (JNPR), down 1.1% after reporting better than expected earnings but announcing the company's CEO will retire once a successor is named... Broadcom (BRCM), down 5.5% after reporting slightly better than forecast earnings but cutting its third quarter revenue view.

UP AFTER EARNINGS: VMware (VMW), up 11.5%... Electronic Arts (EA), up 6.4%. ALSO HIGHER: Barrick Gold (ABX), up 0.5% after announcing the sale of its Barrick Energy unit to Canadian Natural (CNQ).

DOWN AFTER EARNINGS: Panera Bread (PNRA), down 6.2%... Polycom (PLCM), down 5.6%... Norfolk Southern (NSC), down 1.3%. :
