That is one big reason. Zimmerman's attorneys worked for free. But another big one is pleading out. In most criminal cases the law is stacked against the person who is arrested. The prosecutors will throw the book at them unless they plead out and in many cases innocent people will take a misdemeanor charge rather than face many years in prison because they can't afford to actually defend themselves.
