What a lovely worthwhile read, PW...

Great childhood.

Your memory is perfectly in line with yesterday's lunchtime conversation. My friend (a computer savvy data modeler) was railing against the current school system because he felt sandbagged into buying a new bigger and better computer so his kids could complete their assignments. All research must be done on the 'net... no more going to the library to research things in books. All papers have to typed and printed... ridiculous on a fourth grade level. How will these kids ever polish their handwriting or learn to spell and proofread.

But that wasn't the point of his "rant"... his son decided to download via the phone line a game that his friend had. Four hours later only 10% had been downloaded. Father.dearest had a fit. Pulled the plug on him and laid down the law as far as computer use goes.

He said to me.... This is out of control. When I was a kid (he is 11 years younger than I am), I made my own toys. I went outside and made up games with my friends. I played in the woods. What is going on?

There is too much out there that provides instant gratification. We are spoiled and it isn't pretty. Your bottom line...

I couldn’t imagine today’s kids riding those rollers. If they did, they’d be able to cushion their falls with the pile of papers lawyers would produce as a consequence of their injuries. Parents would’ve forbidden the activity. The dairy would’ve been fenced: maybe a security guard hired too. And nobody would’ve allowed them to have something as dangerous to themselves or society as cardboard boxes.

sums it up perfectly.

I am glad we are contemporaries... my childhood provides many fine memories like yours. smile Thank you for sharing a delightful piece of yours.

Bests,
ksquared
